The Chequers Inn
is a traditional village pub that is thriving for good
reason. Whilst others crumble, The Chequers is still in
demand, full of voice and cheer, the tantalizing
smell of good food, and that elusive something that brings
you back again and again. Perhaps it is the landlord, the
infamous Barry, who throws all the right ingredients into
the Chequers pot, keeping it on the boil with his very own
irrepressible charm and style!
The Chequers
renamed to celebrate the Croft racing circuit, from The
Crown & Anchor, was built as Middle Farm around 1620,
replacing an unknown building previously on the site. In
1795 an entrepreneur farmer switched from milking to
serving ale to the commuters and business folk of the day
who passed along the Great North Road outside his door.
There is a particular charm in ordering a pint and pie
just as you may have done 200 years ago.
The Chequers has
a split level restaurant which seats up to 80 people, a
small lounge and a traditional bar where locals meet to
play darts and dominoes and put the world to rights over a
pint or two. Strangers are soon made welcome by the warm
Yorkshire folk.
The restaurant is
famous for the quality of the local produce used and the
proper steak and ale pie is renowned in the district. With
a wide range of dishes from around the World and the best
home made chips anywhere, The Chequers offers something
for every taste. A fantastic children's menu offers proper
food for the smaller ones, and where possible half
portions can be served for those who can not manage a full
dish.

There is always a
range of Real Ales available as well as local and national
beers and lagers, and a carefully chosen selection of
wines are always available by the glass and bottle.
With most of the
guest rooms overlooking the pretty village green they
offer a respite from today's hectic lifestyle. All rooms
are well equipped with WIFI, tea and coffee making
facilities, en-suite, trouser press, iron and ironing
board.
